‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Sees Massive Sales Blast After ‘Edgerunners’ Anime Premiere

CD Projekt Red’s action game Cyberpunk 2077 increased its sales and player count after the release of the spin-off anime series edge runners.

Cyberpunk 2077 launched as such buggy fuck in 2020, with graphics, gameplay and basic functionality issues. Montages of the issues were soon shared online, further damaging the game’s reputation.

It was removed from sale on PlayStation StoreSony and Microsoft have tried to offer refundsand class actions accused CD Projekt of false advertising and misleading investors. Whistleblower later claims outsourced QA firm Quantic Lab lied about his job.

After the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners on Netflix earlier this month, it seems the game’s fortunes have turned. CD Projekt announced at the end of September that Cyberpunk 2077 hit 20 million sales (a reported growth of 18 million since April), and had seen one million daily players.

Looking at Steam database, a third-party website that monitors Steam, we see that the game has seen an increase in concurrent players since September 1. We also see via contraction tracker that the game saw a 234% increase in the number of streamers playing the game compared to the previous month, as well as a 329% increase in viewership.

Speaking on Twitch, Quest director Paweł Sasko was moved by how well the game’s reception was to launch, seemingly holding back tears as dark music played. A clip of the moment was then shared on r/Cyberpunk.

“When I was sitting there in that chair, listening to the questions and thinking about what I’m supposed to say… It’s hard to express you know?” Sasko confessed. “Like, when you put so much heart and soul into something. And you know, for some of us, what was it like? Six, seven, eight years sometimes. You know, especially for those who started at the very beginning.

“So to have this moment, where people are liking something that we’ve done, it’s really… It’s really kind of unreal. That finally there are people liking it.” Sasko paused several times speaking to collect himself “After the release, I couldn’t believe it, you know! Like after a while, of course, but at first I just couldn’t believe it.”

“And I remember Sapphire, who was with me at the time, my dear girlfriend, she saw me f-king completely destroyed.” After a long pause, Sasko added, “Yeah but it’s… It’s good to be back.” It’s f—king good to be back, honestly. I was really so… It was heartbreaking. ”
