Detroit Symphony Orchestra Instrument Commission Aims To Help Students

DETROIT – Not everyone has the opportunity to learn to play an instrument or even own one. That’s why the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is organizing an instrument drive to provide music to students in Detroit.

The benefits of music in a child’s life are endless.

“You learn to work with people, you learn to perfect a passage, you know how to conquer difficult things, you can travel, all of those things are important,” said Damien Crutcher, general manager of Detroit Harmony.

That’s why Crutcher launched Detroit Harmony, an initiative of DSO, to provide music education to students in Detroit.

“It’s a partnership with all the local nonprofit school districts, churches, private class teachers,” he said.

Throughout the month, Detroit Harmony collects new and used instruments so that students based in Detroit can learn to play them.

“Brass, woodwinds, stumps, guitars, percussion, keyboards, anything we can get our hands on so we can pass it on to kids,” Crutcher said. “Can you imagine 2,500 children with instruments? More kids involved in music, across town, it’s going to make a huge difference.

And Detroit Harmony doesn’t stop after giving these instruments away

“When a child receives an instrument from us, they are also assigned a mentor, a manager who will ensure that the instrument remains in good working order. They’re going to make sure that this student is in a program, ”Crutcher said.
