Developed by Spike Chunsoft, the game uses Unreal Engine and will be coming to both Switch and PlayStation 4.
It is indeed an action role-playing game, but it will also have its own story written by the creator of the original manga, Akihito Tsukushi.
The characters and setting look just like the anime and manga, even the monsters look good. However, the same cannot be said for the environments. Like these look very old fashioned, with texture tiles all over.
It’s weird, there are a lot of savvy Unreal Engine developers in Japan now, but the environments in this game seem very basic. I mean, a decent technical artist could have made all the difference here.
If you are unfamiliar with Made in the Abyssit is both a brilliant manga and anime. Riko is a Cave Raider and lives next to Abyssa seemingly endless chasm filled with technology from long lost civilizations. On her journey to find her missing mother, she meets Rega robot boy with immense power.
The story is based on Riko and Reg as they work together to traverse the depths of the abyss, with all the enormous danger and wonder that entails.
The manga and anime are genuinely fascinating works of unbridled imagination, so I had high hopes for this game. It still turns out to be a solid game, but for now it seems like it needs a lot no more work.
Binary star falling in darkness will be released this fall on Switch and PlayStation 4.
