Milana Vayntrub’s Squirrel Girl Resurrected For Podcast Series

The Marvel Universe’s most tragic loss didn’t happen in Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame, it happened when the studio promised us Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl and didn’t deliver. Vayntrub, whose most visible role remains Lily in AT&T phone commercials, was announced to fill the role of Doreen Green in 2017… and we really couldn’t think of a more perfect cast for this part.

The live-action Squirrel Girl was going to premiere in a Marvel TV series called The New Warriors, which would have appeared somewhere like Freeform. But as you know, Marvel’s TV division underwent a heavy restructuring a few months later and completely changed its strategy, focusing on big-budget Disney+ mini-shows that tied directly into the movies.

There was no more room for Squirrel Girl. All we have of what could have been is this leaked photo:

Thing is, it’s not like Vayntrub NEVER got to play the character — she just had to do it in very short, almost non-existent roles. A series of web shorts called Marvel Rising were released the following year, featuring Vayntrub as the voice of Doreen, and now we’re (literally) hearing her voice in a new podcast, Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show.

Squirrel Girl defeated Thanos and Doctor Doom – but now she faces something much more terrifying… living authentically. The new series follows Empire State University student Doreen Green, who was recently introduced as a superhero – The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! Hoping to unify her personalities in the public eye, Squirrel Girl created a new student radio show on ESU’s own college station. With the help of her best friend, Nancy Whitehead as producer, and her squirrel best friend, Tippy-Toe in the booth; Doreen is ready to help more people than ever with her best superhero tips. And when the going gets tough, she can always lean on her heroic friends: Iron Man, Spider-Man, Chipmunk Hunk, Koi Boi and Brain Drain.

However, with a phone show comes caller anonymity and not everyone online wants help – some want to commit crimes – and commit tough crimes! When a suspicious caller wreaks havoc on New York, Squirrel Girl and her friends will have to put their heroism to the test and prove that once and for all, Doreen Green is the invincible Squirrel Girl.

The good thing about it is that it doesn’t just feature Vayntrub, but it’s written by Ryan North, who along with Erica Henderson created a hit comic Squirrel Girl in 2014 that ran for fifty issues. uninterrupted and unrestarted (a real sign of success in Marvel comics these days). Plus, you might be on the show if you’re lucky: a call-in number is posted on the official website, where you can leave a message for Doreen.

The first episode of Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show can be heard now for free; the others will be released in the coming weeks and will require a $4 subscription fee, although there is a one-week free trial.

But where is his Disney+ show? Where is his dramatic entry into the MCU? Vayntrub is not getting any younger, guys!
